
LUMDING: A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of February 12 in Lumding’s Harulongpar area in Assam’s Hojai district, gutting four railway quarters and four commercial establishments at Charge Road, Last Colony. The fire, which is suspected to have originated from a business establishment, was noticed by locals at around 4:30 AM.
The railway quarters in H-33 Block (A, B, C, D) were completely destroyed, affecting railway employees Dulal Malakar, Debashish Roychowdhury, and Biplab Dey. The estimated loss is suspected to be over Rs. 40-50 lakh.
Firefighters from Lumding and Hojai’s Shankardev Nagar doused the fire, but locals said they arrived 45 minutes to an hour late. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Meanwhile, a massive fire had erupted in Habidangra village, located in Baghbar in Assam's Barpeta district, on Monday night, resulting in the complete destruction of a house owned by Javed Ali. Fortunately, there had been no reported human casualties; however, the blaze had claimed the lives of at least five livestock.
Preliminary investigations had revealed that the fire was suspected to have originated from the kitchen of the house. The call to firefighters had been made almost immediately, but since the town was fairly remote, access had been quite difficult. However, with much effort, the fire crew had managed to gain control over the fire.
The incident had caused massive damage, with property losses running into lakhs. The family had suffered severe hardship as a result of the destruction of their house and livestock. Local authorities had been conducting further investigations to ascertain the precise cause of the fire and to evaluate the extent of the damage.
