KOKRAJHAR: The 30th Assam Master Athletic Championship 2024 kicked off on Friday at Kokrajhar Sai Stadium, featuring over 1,200 athletes representing 23 districts from across the state.
Assam Cabinet Minister UG Brahma inaugurated the three-day event, set to conclude on December 30, celebrating sportsmanship and athletic excellence.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Brahma emphasized the significance of the championship in nurturing sports talent and elevating the status of athletics in the region.
“This platform is a testament to the dedication and potential of our athletes, offering them an opportunity to shine and inspire others,” he stated.
MLA Lawrence Islary and officials from the Master Athletic Association attended the event, underscoring the collaborative efforts to promote sports at the grassroots level.
Athletes from diverse age groups are competing across various categories, demonstrating their skill, endurance, and passion for athletics. The championship serves as a vibrant celebration of Assam’s rich sporting heritage, bringing together seasoned competitors and fostering community spirit and pride in the state’s athletic achievements.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the 2024 International Paragliding Championship and Aerosport Festival commenced on December 10 in the Serchhip district of central Mizoram. The event continued until December 13, with the closing ceremony taking place at the Zawlpui landing site, where Mizoram's Chief Minister, Pu Lalduhoma, served as the chief guest.
Although 76 paragliders had registered for the championship, more than half were unable to make it to India. Of the 30 participants who were present, 17 were from India, including 8 from Mizoram.
Pilots from South Korea, Nepal, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia also competed in the event.
