SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Education Department has firmly opposed the unauthorized declaration of school holidays by educational institutions. In a major effort to streamline and enhance the quality of education, the Department has released a detailed set of guidelines for the 2025 academic year.
The 2025 academic year will begin on February 10 with a structured Class Readiness Programme for all students. This preparatory phase will emphasize foundational learning and skill development, with primary school students (Classes I-V) participating until March 7, while middle and high school students (Classes VI-X) will complete it by February 28.
To promote transparency and accountability, the Department will now manage the examination schedules for Classes VI-IX. Schools are required to upload all evaluation results to the Department’s digital platform, ensuring standardized assessment practices. Additionally, the Department of Educational Research and Training (DERT) or the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) will create standardized question papers for all annual examinations.
The academic calendar has been carefully structured with clear term dates. Sessions will end on November 28 for pre-primary and December 17 for Classes I-IX, followed by a winter break. To ensure sufficient instructional time, schools are required to meet mandatory requirements of 200 working days for primary levels and 220 for higher classes, corresponding to 800 and 1,000 instructional hours, respectively.
Acknowledging the academic performance concerns raised in the National Achievement Survey (NAS), the Department has introduced focused learning periods at the start of each term. Primary classes will allocate four weeks to foundational learning, while higher classes will have three weeks of targeted instruction. This initiative aims to strengthen core skills and enhance overall academic performance.
