JAMUGURIHAT: The central programme of the Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival, convened by the Ahom Jatiya Mahasabha in collaboration with various organizations of the greater Sootea area, was held at Mula Gabharu Moidam located at Solahola on the northern part of Sootea on Friday amid various programmes. Me-Dam-Me-Phi, one of the significant and important festivals of the Ahoms, is dedicated to the ancestors. On this very day, the ancestors are remembered by their near and dear ones through religious rites and convention. In the morning, traditional worship was offered to the ancestors through age-old tradition and as per the convention. It was followed by an open session with Ananda Handique, President of Purvanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha in the chair. Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika offered the welcome address. Welcoming the delegates, MLA Hazarika cited the examples of patriots like General Lachit Barphuka, Mula Gabharu, etc. and appealed to all concerned to follow the path shown by the great souls. Biswanath MLA Pramod Borthakur explained the significance of Me-Dam-Me-Phi and spoke about the government’s initiative in upgrading the Mula Gabharu Moidam. Rangchi, a souvenir edited by historian cum President of the reception committee Karunananda Hatibarua, was unveiled.
The programme was attended by Sundar Jyoti Lahan, President of Ahom Jatiya Mahasabha, Ananta Gogoi, Secretary, Nirmal Lahan, Vice-President of Ahom Jatiya Mahasabha, besides other central members. The Ahom Jatiya Mahasabha formally conferred Asom title to Uttak Kumar Nath, Secretary of the reception committee cum Secretary of Sootea Press Club. He was awarded the title along with an Ahom sword (hengdang) and gamosa. The day-long programme was attended by Munindra Nath Nagatey, District Commissioner, Biswanath, Dr Akashdeep Kakaty, Circle Officer of Naduar revenue circle, Bhaba Saikia, President of Sootea chapter of Senior Citizens’ Forum, Paresh Barkakaty, Vice-Chairman of Animal Husbandry, Dilip Kumar Bhuyan, and Dipshikha Handique, besides other dignitaries.
