DOOMDOOMA: Under the auspices of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model (PNGBGM) College, Kakapather, a 'Meet the Press' programme with the scribes of the Tinsukia District and a talk on 'The Role of Media in Building the Society' was organized on Saturday.
The event was chaired by the President of the Governing Body (GB) of the college, Dr. Deepak Goswami. In the beginning, Principal Dr. Thanuram Maninder welcomed the guest.
Dr. Panchanan Hazarika, assistant professor, Department of Assamese, explained the objectives of the meeting while Bituraj Gohain, assistant professor, Department of Education, presented a PowerPoint (PP) presentation of different activities of the college since inception.
Senior journalist Dhiren Deka delivered the speech on the topic as chief speaker. Explaining how the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and freedom fighters like Jawaharlal Nehru took to journalism by bringing out newspapers like 'Young India' (1919) and 'National Hareld'(1938) to spread the message of the freedom movement to the people, he said that the information technology brought in its wake citizen journalism in the form of social media.
However, he emphasized on science journalism in order to eliminate the "mental gap" arising out of man's mind lagging far behind the reality and environment created by the amazing strides of science and technology. He quoted Ritche Calder, the recipient of the Kalinga Award and regarded as the father of modern specialized scientific journalism, who said, 'Science has to be understood at all levels. If we are to have science effectively administered by government and public bodies or by the boards of industries, we have to educate those who are to form the judgements about science and to decide priorities.'
A book titled 'Tinsukia District: Glimpses of Socio-Economic Issues' brought out under the joint editorship of Dr. Azizur Rahman, Head, Department of Economics, and Dr. Chetan Chandra Das, Head of the Department of Education, was formally inaugurated by Arjun Baruah, a former journalist and former president of Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha.
The interactive session was attended by Dr. Rishi Das, President, Tinsukia District Journalists Association (TDJA); Manoj Dutta, President, Doomdooma Press Club (DPC); Abhijit Khataniar, Vice President, DPC; Robin Moran, veteran journalist; and Arun Baruah, former President, DPC. They put forward various suggestions for further improvement of the college, which is situated on the Assam-Arunachal border and is providing education to a vast number of students from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh as well.
