Assam: Meghalaya Woman Allegedly Assaulted By Sub-Inspector of State Police

Guwahati: A woman from Meghalaya's North Garo Hills was allegedly assaulted and harassed by a sub-inspector and a policewoman of Assam Police in connection with a coal delivery case.

As per reports, the incident which triggered widespread protest from the Garo organizations in the region took place on July 4 within the premises of Dudhnoi Police Station.

Meanwhile, a few media reports claimed that the two police personnel have been reportedly suspended.

The sub-inspector from the Dudhnoi Police Station called the woman named Mousumi along with her husband to the police station on the pretext of recording a statement in a case that was filed against her husband by a person called Dhrubananda Choudhary.

In his complaint, Choudhury had alleged that the victim's husband named Sengkal Marak had taken the money and also promised to deliver coal to him. The Choudhury further mentioned in its complaint that an amount of Rs 95,000 was being paid to the Marak to illegally transport the coal into Assam from where it was dumped.

Reportedly, she and her husband had reached the police station at about 2:30 PM. At 3:30 PM, the victim's husband went out of the police station for tea after which, SI Bishnu Bahadur Newar accused her of helping her husband to run away from the spot.

Following this, the sub-inspector ordered a policewoman named Mamta Joshi, to start beating her.

''They started assaulting me and didn't stop. I felt they would murder me. They even outraged my modesty in the PS,'' she added.

As per reports, following the assault, the woman is finding it difficult in lying down or sitting. They are bruises all over her body.

'' The accused was my husband but the police beat me up when they couldn't get him. They threatened me and took an amount of Rs 50,000 that I had with me for my children's fees,'' she added.

Following such harassment, the victim filed a police complaint with the superintendent of police, Goalpara, against the accused cops as well as the coal merchant.
