KOKRAJHAR: As part of the state's ongoing efforts to modernize its correctional facilities, Assam's Minister for Home (Prisons, Home Guards and Civil Defence), Labour Welfare, Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare departments, Rupesh Gowala, conducted an official visit to the newly-built District Jail in Kajalgaon, Chirang on Tuesday.
The facility, developed with an investment of approximately Rs 65 crore, is scheduled for formal inauguration on June 21 by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. Designed to house up to 636 inmates, the jail includes provisions for 557 regular inmates and a quarantine section for 79 individuals.
During the inspection, Minister Gowala assessed the infrastructure, security systems, and amenities provided for inmates. He noted that the facility reflects the government's commitment to building a correctional system that emphasizes safety, rehabilitation, and humane treatment. Key features include separate hospital wards, dedicated sanitation areas, a library and educational facilities.
The minister was accompanied by several senior officials, including Inspector General of Prisons Pubali Gohain, DIG Gautam Bora, MLAs Nirmal Kumar Brahma and Ajoy Kumar Ray, Chirang District Commissioner Jatin Bora, and Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg.
