GUWAHATI: Assam Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Jayanta Mallabaruah chaired an in-depth review meeting with representatives from Urban Local Bodies, including Municipal Corporations and Municipal Boards in Guwahati.

The review meeting was conducted under the auspices of the Housing and Urban Affairs Department. The discussions centered on tackling key urban challenges, with the meeting exploring strategies to provide adequate and proper sanitation infrastructure for all residents.

The meeting also covered the provision of safe drinking water facilities and the development of efficient drainage systems to prevent flooding and safeguard public health. Additionally, the discussions explored innovative approaches for comprehensive urban development.

The meeting was attended by the mayor of the Municipal Corporation, chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of Municipal Boards, and Urban Administrative Service officials, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts for efficient urban management.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had announced plans to revamp the Fancy Bazaar parking lot, a facility that had been plagued by complaints of poor maintenance and inadequate infrastructure.

Inaugurated in 2020, the parking lot was initially hailed as a solution to the growing traffic congestion in Fancy Bazaar, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the Northeast. However, the facility quickly became a source of frustration for residents and commuters, who cited issues such as waterlogging, muddy conditions, and poor traffic management.

“The condition of this parking lot is terrible. Vehicles get stuck all the time. Parking here should be convenient, not a nightmare,” said a resident of Jail Road.
