GUWAHATI: Assam's Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Pijush Hazarika has urged the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyudaya Yojana (PM-AJAY) to enhance the hostel component for Assam and the Northeast region under the scheme.
At the first CAC meeting of PM-AJAY in New Delhi, Hazarika spoke about the region's problems and requested more financial help. The meeting was led by Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar and attended by CAC members, state ministers, and senior officials from various ministries.
Hazarika asked the committee to raise the hostel fund from Rs. 20 lakh, saying the Northeast needs more support than other regions. He emphasized that the Northeast requires extra help under the hostel component.
He reaffirmed Assam's commitment to improving the lives of Scheduled Caste (SC) communities through the PM-AJAY scheme. Hazarika met Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar and suggested establishing India’s first Divyang University in Assam.
"During our meeting, I requested the Central Government, led by our visionary leader, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, through the Hon’ble Minister, to consider establishing India’s first Divyang University in Assam," Minister Pijush Hazarika posted on X.
Hazarika highlighted that such an institution would be instrumental in empowering persons with disabilities through education, skill development, and various initiatives. Dr. Kumar underscored the significance of PM-AJAY in addressing socio-economic disparities.
"We are working together to support SC individuals and promote overall growth," he said. PM-AJAY, launched in 2021-22, aims to improve the lives of Scheduled Caste communities in India by focusing on education, reducing poverty, and developing skills.
