GUWAHATI: The alleged case of sexual assault on a minor girl, undergoing treatment at Assam's Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), has stunned one and all.

The initial report said that a male sanitation worker did the deed inside the hospital compound. Later, it was revealed that a woman staff member was also involved in the case.

The victim filed a complaint at Bhangagarh Police Station on January 21, 2025. The police acted swiftly and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, designated Bhangagarh PS Case No. 18/2025. After investigation, two persons, Abdul Rashid and Karabi Roy, were arrested on Friday. Both are members of the cleaning staff of the hospital.

The accused were produced before the court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. According to a police statement, the victim has received medical care by the provisions of the POCSO Act, and her statement has been recorded judicially. Furthermore, the police have collected material and technical evidence using scientific methods to strengthen the case.

Arrests: a step in the right direction by the administration for the investigations to move ahead; however, under fire lies the GMCH administration due to serious accusations that claim they tried to downplay the occurrence inside the institution by not making safety and justice its priority within those premises.

This disturbing incident has unleashed public anger and demands stricter measures for the protection of patients and greater accountability in medical institutions. The authorities are being asked to carry out an in-depth investigation and to act strongly against the guilty.

The accident calls for more scrutiny and preventive measures in public health facilities, thus emphasizing that the safety of patients, especially vulnerable individuals like minors, must be uppermost.
