BOKAKHAT: Late Monday night at Badulipar, right alongside National Highway 37 near the post office, within the Dergaon Police Station limits of Golaghat district, some miscreant set fire to a Tata Tigor XT (AS03W7099), the luxury vehicle of Tea-Garden Welfare Officer Jyoti Prakash Kumir, parked in the private garage of his temporary residence. Significantly, the incident took place on the final day of the cooperative’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, during a musical performance by vocalist Deeplina Deka. According to the victim, a woman returning home from that very programme noticed flames roaring from the front of Kumir’s vehicle and raised the alarm. By the time he rushed outside, the engine compartment at the front of the car was already almost completely ablaze. Thanks to the desperate efforts of local residents, the rear of the vehicle was saved, but the car was nevertheless rendered inoperative. While trying to douse the flames, Kumir suffered burn injuries to parts of his hand. He later observed that, had the bystander not sounded the alarm, the fire could easily have spread to his house and endangered his family. In response to the incident, Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of the Dergaon-Khumtai branch of the cooperative, has strongly urged the Dergaon Police to step up patrols and station personnel along the highway. He also pointed out that roadside tea-shops have proliferated beside the highway and are freely selling alcohol and country liquor without any regulation. Despite being informed of these illicit activities, he claims that the police have yet to take any action.
