BOKAKHAT: A sensational murder at Atukhada Chuk under Khumtai Police Station in Golaghat district has sent tremors through the region. According to allegations, Minai Gogoi and his son conspired and killed Kanchha, who had worked for nearly 20 years at Gogoi’s illicit country-liquor distillery, and buried his body near the historic Dhala Jaan tree close to their residence.
Acting on special intelligence, the Officer-in-Charge of Khumtai Police Station mounted a raid on the Gogoi household early this morning. However, upon learning of the impending police action, the principal suspects fled the scene. Meanwhile, police arrested Jiten Karmakar (alias Papu), who was employed at Gogoi’s distillery, for questioning. Based on Karmakar’s confession, authorities exhumed the body in the presence of a magistrate’s representative and sent it to Golaghat for post-mortem examination.
Investigators are now searching for Minai Gogoi, Binod, Ratul Modi, and Jiten Gogoi, all named in Karmakar’s confession. The police confirmed that all four have absconded. Local residents, living in this densely populated area, remained unaware of the clandestine burial until the police uncovered the grave.
At the crime scene, the Officer-in-Charge of Komargaon Police Station, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Bokakhat, and the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Golaghat district have launched an official probe. However, the police have not yet briefed the media on the details of the case.
It is noteworthy that illegal country-liquor distilleries in Atukhada Chuk have long disrupted the social fabric of the region. Despite repeated crackdowns by the police and excise department, notorious bootleggers continued to operate these illicit enterprises unhindered. The Khumtai Police have registered a case suo motu and begun a thorough investigation.
