BARPETA: A penalty of Rs. 8,000 has been imposed for the unauthorized pulling of an alarm chain in a train by the Special Magistrate Court of Bongaigaon. The case is the first of its kind in the region.

The incident occurred on 15 November 2024 when the culprit pulled the alarm chain of the 12520 Agartala–Lokmanya Tilak Express near Barpeta Road station, resulting in an unscheduled stop at Km 296/1.

The on-duty Railway Protection Force (RPF) team immediately apprehended the culprit. The offender was prosecuted under Section 141 of the Railways Act, which deals with misuse of the alarm chain with fines, detention charges, or both.

Such incidents have already been faced by the RPF of the Northeast Frontier (N.F.) Railway in the past. Five such cases in the Alipurduar division and eight such incidents in the Katihar division. All accused are before the trial court in these cases.

Railway officials stress that misuse of alarm chains delays train schedules, causes operational losses, and endangers passengers. The chains are installed in the coaches of trains for emergency situations arising from safety or security concerns.

The use of chains without proper authorization is an offense liable to be punished under the Railways Act, with a fine or even arrest.

The penalty's implementation demonstrates the Railways' dedication to deterring such conduct and upholding safety and timeliness throughout its network.
