Assam-Mizoram Border Talks: Crucial Meet In Guwahati Today

GUWAHATI: An all-important meet on the disputed borders areas between Assam and Mizoram is all set to take place here on Wednesday.

The crucial meet is concerned around resolving disputed areas in the Assam-Mizoram border. While Mizoram stakes its claim over a 509 square mile stretch as its original boundary according to the inner line reserve forest notified in 1875 by the British, Assam considers the map prepared by Survey of India in the year 1933 as the legit boundary.

As per information, the meeting scheduled to begin at 5 pm will be attended by senior ministers from Assam and Mizoram, Atul Bora and Lalruatkima respectively. It is learnt that this will be a preliminary meet to oversee the preparations ahead of another meeting slated to take place begin at 11 am on Thursday.

Notably this will be the third round of talks between the high-level delegations from both the Northeastern states to find a resolution to the nearly five-decade long issue.

Although the meet was originally scheduled for November 4, but it was postponed later owing to President of India Droupadi Murmu's visit to Mizoram. Officials from the Mizoram Government then requested their counterparts from Assam to reschedule the talks between November 9 to November 11.

It may be recalled here that the border dispute between both Assam and Mizoram was ignited after the violence last year in the month of July. In the incident that took place in Lailapur along the border, as many as six Assam Police personnel and one civilian lost their lives.

Following the incident, the delegations from both the states met in August 2021 for resolving the dispute. Thereafter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga too held talks in November 2021 followed by another meet in September this year.
