GUWAHATI: In a tragic incident, a mother and her two daughters drowned while bathing in the river in Chandrapur's Powerhouse area near Guwahati. The tragedy occurred when Golapi Devi, the mother, went to the river with her daughters for a bath.
Eyewitnesses reported that Golapi's younger daughter began to drown, prompting her elder daughter, Nilakshi Kumari, to jump in and try to save her sister. Unfortunately, she too was swept away by the strong current. And when Golapi Devi attempted to save her children, Golapi also drowned and went missing.
Responding swiftly, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Assam Police launched a search operation to locate the bodies. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks of bathing in rivers without proper safety measures. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the entire area, with residents mourning the loss of the family.
In another similar incident, a 17-year-old boy, Arindam Kumar, tragically drowned in a pond at the backside of the botanical garden, 5 km on the Diphu-Lumding Road, Diphu, under the Diphu police station, earlier in March.
Arindam, a resident of Basic LP School near Diphu Municipal Board, was bathing with friends Pragyan Kumar Boruah and Takeno Rengma when the incident occurred.
