MANGALDAI: Dharmeswar Deka, a dedicated and passionate activist of the AASU-AAGSP-led historic Assam Movement in Darrang district is no more. He breathed his last on Tuesday morning at a private hospital here in Mangaldai following a prolonged illness. He was 68. A proud son of Hazarikapara in Sipajhar LAC, Late Deka was a founding member of the Dakkhin Mangaldai Anchalik Gana Sangram Parishad and an active volunteer of the Volunteer Force of the erstwhile Mangaldai District Students’ Union since the Assam Movement’s inception in 1979. His unwavering commitment to the cause left an indelible mark in the area. Later, he served diligently at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Darrang, joining as a Junior Assistant and retiring as a Head Assistant in 2017.
His mortal remains were consigned to flames as per Vedic rituals at his ancestral home, in presence of a large gathering of mourners, including relatives, friends, and colleagues, who paid their heartfelt tributes. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
