Assam: Murder Case of Nandita Saikia to be Heard in Fast Track Court

After a long cabinet meeting with the chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma the announcement was made. Assam's special DGP GP Singh has been directed to oversee the entire investigation process.

While speaking with the media, Assam cabinet minister, Ranoj Pegu said during the cabinet meeting the, the entire cabinet expressed deep shock and grief in the murder incident of Nandita Saikia and in the meeting the government has recommended a fast-track court trial in this murder case.

"Special DGP GP Singh has been directed to oversee the entire investigation process", the minister said.

The Minister also prayed to god for the peace of the departed soul and expressed his condolences to her family members.

Nandita Saikia, who was a resident of Naba Kathbaru village in Dhakuakhana, was allegedly attacked with a machete by one Rintu Sarma in the Dhemaji district of Assam after she rejected his marriage proposal. Later, police arrested Sarma.

Earlier today, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee demanded that the state BJP government, which has failed to maintain law and order, must give exemplary punishment to the perpetrator of Nandita Saikia's murder.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee expresses deep concern and anguish at the untimely demise of Nandita Saikia, a brilliant student of Dhemaji Moridhol College and resident of Dhakuakhana. The BJP- led Assam Government has failed completely in maintaining law and order in the state, as evident from this dastardly murder. The broad daylight attack on this young student with a machete, leading to her death, exposes the inefficient administrative system. Assam has been at number one among states in crimes against women in the last 3 years. Women are not safe in a state where the government is hell-bent on protecting cows.
