NAGAON: A student from Nagaon, Assam, has alleged that he was cheated out of Rs 7,18,750 when he tried to enrol in a private medical college in Haryana.

Debajit Biswas, son of retired planning officer Bijoy Biswas of Nagaon Itachali area, had cleared the NEET exam in 2024. But he couldn’t secure admission to a government medical college. He then applied to a private medical college in Haryana and paid the first instalment of Rs 7,18,750 as the academic fees.

As per the allegation, Debajit submitted an online application in May last, to the private medical college in Haryana, along with a security deposit of Rs 1 lakh.

Significantly, in the month of October of the same year, the concerned authority of the college informed Debajit that he had qualified for admission to Al Falah Medical College. His parents paid the first instalment of the academic fees, but later decided not to pursue studies at the college due to personal reasons. Meanwhile, Debajit’s parents requested a refund, which the college authorities agreed to, but didn’t process.

After repeated requests, Debajit’s parents filed an application under the Right to Information Act, asking when the refund would be made. A month later, they filed a first appeal, which prompted the college authorities to respond. However, the response revealed that the refund had been deposited into an unknown person’s account named Ritesh Kumar.

Debajit’s father, Bijoy Biswas, even appealed to the Chief Minister of Haryana and the District Commissioner to intervene and ensure a refund. Having received no justice, he wrote to the Prime Minister in January. Now, he has requested Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and provide justice.

The incident highlights the plight of students who fall prey to alleged malpractices in private educational institutions outside Assam. Bijoy Biswas’s plea underscores the need for authorities to take action against such institutions and protect students’ interests.
