NAGAON: The Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha, along with its Upashana branch, organized a ceremony to celebrate Arunodoi Day, which marks the anniversary of the first Assamese newspaper, ‘Arunodoi’ at Milanpur Khagarijan High School on Wednesday.
Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami, the newly-elected president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, attended the event as the chief guest and delivered a speech. He emphasized the importance of balancing tradition and modernity, saying that the Assam Sahitya Sabha needs to adapt to the changing times while preserving its core values. During the event, the district body of the literary organization also felicitated Dr Basanta Kr Goswami and newly elected vice president Padum Rajkhuwa.
Goswami also highlighted the significance of Arunodoi, which played a crucial role in promoting nationalism and intellectual discourse in Assam. He praised the newspaper’s contribution to the state’s cultural and literary heritage.
The event also included the felicitation of newly elected office-bearers of the Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha, including its president, and vice-president, Mrinal Kumar Hazarika.
Additionally, the sabha honored several journalists and distinguished individuals of the district, including Jogal Chandra Dev Goswami, Subharam Majumdar, and Hemen Das, Kanak Hazarika among others.
The ceremony concluded with a proposal to institute an award in the name of Miles Bronson, a pioneering American missionary who contributed significantly to the development of Assamese language and literature.
