Assam: New Militant Organization ‘Bodo Liberation Army’ Emerges in BTR

GUWAHATI: A new military organization ‘Bodo Liberation Army’ has emerged in BTR with the demand for a breakaway state of "Boroland," according to the militant group's press release.

According to a report, the organization's main members are B Dwidengra, president; B Rwngwra, vice president; B Ankhlai, commander of the armed forces; and B Bwkhangsa, general secretary.

On January 27, 2020, with the signing of the third BTR peace agreement, tranquility was restored to Bodoland.

But after the BTR agreement had been in place for two and a half years, there were rumors of the emergence of another armed group. Under the direction of the organization's president, B. Daidengra, information about the establishment of the new outfit in February was sent to many WhatsApp groups via an emergency number.

In 2022, The Bodo National Students' Union (BoNSU) protested at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar, calling for the creation of a separate Bodoland state.

The "Divide Assam 50/50" slogan is shouted by the protesters. Later, the Delhi Police got involved and took some of the protesters into custody.

They organized a protest in Kokrajhar earlier this year, in the month of April, calling for a separate state for Bodoland.

Additionally, a memo was delivered to the Prime Minister by way of the Deputy Commissioner.

The Bodo Peace Accord was signed in an effort to broaden the authority of the Bodoland Territorial Council and streamline its operations; to address concerns about Bodo residents outside of BTAD; to promote and safeguard Bodo social, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic identities; to provide legal protection for tribal members' land rights; to hasten the development of tribal areas; and to rehabilitate NDFB faction members.

The agreement also calls for the creation of a Bodo-Kachari Welfare Council in accordance with established protocol, notification of the Bodo language as a co-official language in the State, and the creation of a special directorate for Bodo-medium schools.
