JAMUGURIHAT: Dharam Kanta Saikia, a nonagenarian retired teacher, social worker, writer, and journalist, was felicitated by team members of Prajanmya Unmesh, a socio-cultural NGO of international fame, today at his Sologuri residence.

DK Saikia is ninety-seven years old. Notwithstanding his advanced age, he is still relentlessly serving the people according to his capacity. The main milestone of his work is as the editor of the first memoir book of the historic Baresohoriya Bhaona of Jamugurihat in early eighties. Dharma Kanta Saikia is the first person to create an intellectual awakening among the common masses of Jamugurihat. The Baresohoriya Bhaona is the highest form of achievement of Sankardeva’s culture. Chief Executive Officer of Prajanmya Unmesh artist Arup Saikia said, “Saikia was our moral courage during the challenging period (2017-18) when we faced pressure from a dogmatic society to perform Bhaona in the English language across the world. Moreover, he is the author of several books and a regular contributor to the Manikanchan magazine of the Sankar Sangha. Saikia should be an ideal of the society, away from the politics of flattery. So he is a deserving person to be felicitated.”

It is noteworthy to say that Prajanmya Unmesh felicitates renowned personalities of Assam every year.
