SILCHAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar has suspended D. Koteshwara Raju, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, after a first-year female student accused him of molestation. Following a massive protest across the campus demanding strict action, the administration announced the suspension at around 3:00 AM today.
Reports claim that the student confided in her classmates after the professor allegedly touched the student inappropriately. Furious students quickly mobilized, staging protests and demanding immediate disciplinary action. The protests intensified, with students demanding a transparent and swift investigation.
Institutional sources claim that Raju has faced similar accusations in the past. A similar complaint was made against him in 2021, and several other allegations are believed to have gone unreported.
The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at NIT Silchar has now launched a formal investigation into the allegations. A fair and comprehensive investigation into the incident has been guaranteed by the committee, which is responsible for handling sexual harassment cases under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013.
Similarly, a serious allegation of a minor’s molestation on campus against a staff member of the Law Department created a mass ruckus at Assam University last month in February. A complaint was lodged against Faruq Ahmed, a non-teaching staff member of the law department, accusing him of molesting a minor girl inside the campus.
