Assam: Over 15 villages in Numaligarh flooded after NEEPCO water release

BOKAKHAT: The release of a larger volume of water once again from the Doyang Hydroelectric Project, operated by NEEPCO in Nagaland, has caused the water levels of the Dhansiri and Doyang rivers to rise. To ensure the safety of the reservoir and reduce excessive pressure, NEEPCO authorities reopened the gates and decided to discharge water in a controlled manner.

By 4:00 pm on Thursday, the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh was already flowing one metre above the danger level. In Numaligarh, the overflowing Dhansiri has inundated more than 15 villages, including Roudwar, Baurigaon, Parghat, Dhodang, Napathar, Pongka, Gandhir Gaon, and Borchapori.

Fresh flooding has submerged several new areas in Numaligarh due to the rising waters. Around 30 families in No. 1 Parghat village have had their homes inundated. Many families of the village have been forced to abandon their homes and take shelter in temporary camps. Roads are submerged, leaving boats as the only means of transportation. For the second time during the month of Shravan, No. 1 Parghat village has been submerged by floodwaters.

The affected families are currently taking shelter at a nearby brick kiln, where they have sought refuge from the floods. They alleged that they have not yet received any government relief assistance.
