GUWAHATI: In a significant announcement, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have informed that both the parties have decided to contest the upcoming Assam Panchayat elections together.

This was confirmed following a meeting attended by leaders from both parties which was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Basistha, Guwahati on Sunday.

BJP MP and state party president Dilip Saikia assured that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP will remain united for both the Panchayat elections and the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam.

The state BJP President stated that the incumbent alliance is geared up to contest the Panchayat elections together, adding that coordination will be overseen by a senior leader while district-level party workers will be engaged in planning the election strategy.

AGP President and Assam Minister Atul Bora reiterated the commitment and he went on to label the Panchayat elections as a “semi-final” before the Assembly elections scheduled to be conducted next year.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, the Panchayat and Rural Development Minister of Assam, declared that the panchayat elections of the state will be conducted in the month of April. He urged the Assam State Election Commission to announce the election dates as soon as possible.

Dass said that “Our government is ready for the Panchayat elections, and we request the Assam State Election Commission to announce the dates promptly. If the election dates are set for April 3, the election process will be completed by May 3. If the dates are announced on April 4, 5, or 6, the elections will conclude by May 4, 5, or 6.”
