BARPETA: Assam's Minister of Public Health Engineering Jayanta Malla Baruah announced during his visit to Barpeta on Friday that the state’s panchayat elections are likely to be held in April. He mentioned that the elections will be scheduled after school exams conclude on March.

Baruah was present at a gathering attended by BJP workers and supporters, where he interacted with newly appointed party officials. The minister also spoke about the BJP’s preparations for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, expressing confidence in the party's prospects.

Referring to the recent Lok Sabha election results, he stated that the BJP-led NDA aims to win 100 constituencies, including Barpeta and Bhabanipur–Sorbhog.

Last month, the Gauhati High Court on Thursday lifted the earlier stay order on the Panchayat elections, clearing the way for the elections to proceed in the state.

The Assam government had appealed against the single judge bench's ruling, which had initially stayed the elections in Panchayat areas covered by nine writ petitions. The division bench of the High Court granted relief, allowing the elections to go ahead.

Earlier, on January 10, a single-judge bench had permitted the elections, excluding areas covered by the nine pending litigations. In the latest ruling, the division bench imposed a stay on the petitions to enable the election process, with the cases continuing separately.
