NAMERI: A poacher was fatally shot during an encounter with forest guards in the dense forests of Assam's Nameri National Park yesterday on Sunday. The incident happened about 50 kilometres away from the regional office of the park near the Dikarai area close to Jamugurihat.
According to reports, the poacher had gone to the national park with the intention of hunting a Sambar deer. In the course of a routine operation, the forest guards detected the poacher and tried to apprehend him. The suspect opened fire on the guards, and the latter retaliated in self-defence.
Gunfire ensued, which eventually killed the poacher. The forest guard team conducted a search at the site and found a handmade gun and a carcass of a Sambar deer, meaning that the poacher was conducting some illegal activities in the protected area.
The poacher's identity has still not been ascertained but the authorities are looking into the details of his past and possible accomplices. This incident sheds light on some of the ongoing problems for the wildlife protection agencies to curb the problem of poaching and conserve biodiversity in Nameri National Park. Investigations into the situation are already underway, aimed at enhancing security measures in the area.
