GUWAHATI: The Assam Police has issued a Public Safety Notice that they expect all drivers to adhere to in light of the festive picnic season and winter fog challenges that people will most certainly face. The advisory video released by the police recommends some of the most important do’s and don'ts in order to travel safely during this period.

Key Guidelines for Driving in Foggy Conditions:

  1. Maintain a Safe Speed: Driving in dense fog can be quite dangerous and therefore many drivers are encouraged to maintain a certain speed limit. It is important to retain control so as to decrease the chances of an accident.

  2. Use Low Beam Lights: When a driver uses high beam light in foggy conditions, chances are that some glare may interfere with the driver’s visibility since high beam light tends to reflect off water droplets in the fog, as a result of which, low beam light have been recommended to be used in these conditions. Fog lights are also advised to use if available.

  3. Keep a Safe Distance: Collisions and accidents are made worse when vehicles are too close to one another so it is rather important to maintain a safe distance between them, especially during conditions of low visibility.

  4. Check Lights and Wipers: Before departing on a foggy day it is advised to check that the headlights and fog lights as well as the wipers are functioning properly since losing such components decreases one’s line of sight.

  5. Use Indicators: Finally, traffic indicators should be utilized properly whereby road users communicate their intentions to other drivers while making the roads safer as well.

Additional Travel Safety Recommendations:

  • Assign a Sober Driver: To avoid unnecessary risks, it is wise to always put a sober individual behind the steering wheel. The travelers should be encouraged not to take the driving roles if they are drinking alcohol.

  • Plan Travel Around Weather: Before organizing a trip, it is wise to keep an eye on the weather forecast. People are advised not to travel during anticipating heavy rains or heavy fog as this adds risk.

  • Travel During Daylight Hours: The trips should be planned in such a way that they begin after the sun rises in the morning and end before sun sets in the evening. This time bracket should be followed to avoid the risks associated with lowlights early in the morning or late at night.

The additional travel safety recommendations are aimed to promote safe practices among drivers and travelers, helping reduce accidents during the winter season. Assam Police urges citizens to adhere to these guidelines and prioritize safety for a secure and enjoyable picnic period.
