GUWAHATI: Kamrup Police have arrested a 20-year-old youth, Ricky Khan, also known as Rekib Ali, for allegedly posting objectionable content on Instagram targeting Lord Ram. The arrest came in response to widespread social media outrage, with users on X (formerly Twitter) demanding swift action to preserve communal harmony.
Ricky Khan, who identifies as a "Professional Model" and holds the title "Mr. Guwahati 2k23" according to his Instagram bio, faced criticism after his remarks were considered offensive and potentially inflammatory.
The incident, which drew widespread attention after being highlighted on social media, has sparked renewed debate over the balance between freedom of expression and respect for religious sentiments. Critics warned that such comments could disrupt societal harmony, leading authorities to take swift action.
Kamrup Police reported the arrest and stated that legal actions are underway. However, further information regarding the investigation has not been disclosed.
The case has ignited a broader conversation about responsible behavior on social media, particularly regarding content that might offend religious sentiments. It underscores the significant influence online activities can have in a sensitive socio-cultural environment like India.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, three administrators of the Facebook page Manipur News Group 2024 were taken into custody by the Manipur Police on suspicion of authorizing and publishing derogatory and threatening comments directed against Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh and his cabinet.
