GOALPARA: Police Assam have launched a search operation to catch the three suspected Rohingya inmates who escaped in the night at a detention transit camp in Goalpara district on Thursday night.
The escape took place at the Matia detention centre, where the three men, identified as Bodi Alam, Mustafa Kamal, and Abdul Kader, reportedly scaled the walls under the cover of darkness to make their escape. The incident was discovered the following day, Friday, when officials conducted attendance checks at the centre.
The detention centre, first initiated to operate in January 2023, holds individuals suspected of being illegal foreigners in Assam.
IGP (Law and Order) Akhilesh Singh responded to the event by visiting the Matia center on Saturday to assess the situation and launch an investigation into the escape.
The police are tracking the leads, and the authorities are conducting investigations regarding circumstances that might have led the escapees to breach the security arrangements at the detention center. The authorities have stated that measures necessary to ensure this does not recur will be put in place.
To date, the police are pursuing several leads tracing the three persons while remaining at a heightened state of alert within the neighboring regions to allow them to be captured in good time.
