Assam: Police Recovers Rhino Horn in Nagaon, 3 Apprehended

GUWAHATI: The Nagaon police, responding to a tip-off, detained three smugglers in connection with a case on March 23 and recovered a rhino horn.

Khaliluddin, Jakir Hussain, and Akbar Ali, all from the Rupohihat region, were the people who were arrested. The three smugglers were apprehended in Rupohihat's Ambagan neighbourhood.

Earlier, in a major breakthrough in the fight against rhino poaching, two poachers were apprehended in a joint operation by Biswanath police and Gohpur police in the southern region of Gohpur.

Pankaj Pegu and Arvind Pegu have been recognised as the poachers. In the southern region of Gohpur, the two allegedly devised a plan to kill a rhino that was emerging from the Sixth Addition of Kaziranga.

Nevertheless, their scheme was halted when law enforcement officials caught wind of their operations. The two rhino poachers have already been detained by the Gohpur police, who have also filed a case under section 120B/447 of the IPC. The suspects have been ordered to jail detention for further investigation.

Since rhino poaching has been a significant problem in the area for some time, this operation's success is being hailed as a significant victory in the ongoing war against wildlife crime.

A sharpshooter escaping and hiding in the state of Assam was arrested by the West Bengal police along with the state forest unit. The man has been identified as Leken Basumatari, and he is engaged with several rhino killings in Jaldapara, located in West Bengal and Gorumara and Kaziranga forests ranges of Assam.

Basumatari was nabbed following a joint operation initiated by the West Bengal police and forest department. Later, the accused was presented before the judicial magistrate in Alipurduar on 15th of February, Wednesday.

The forest officials informed that, the accused along with his pals are connected with almost all of the rhino poaching cases in the national habitats.
