Assam Polls 2021: 345 Candidates' Luck to be Decided on Thursday, Voting Begins at 7 AM in 39 Constituencies in Phase 2

Assam Polls 2021: 345 Candidates' Luck to be Decided on Thursday, Voting Begins at 7 AM in 39 Constituencies in Phase 2

Guwahati: Over 73,44, 631 voters in 39 constituencies across 13 districts of Assam is all set to vote on Thursday. The fate of 345 candidates will be sealed in the EVMs. Voting will begin at 7 AM and is supposed to go on till 6 PM.

Of the total 354 candidates, the number of male candidates is 319 and there are 26 women candidates contesting in Phase 2. In Phase 1, there were 264 candidates and the number of male candidates were 241 and women were 23.

There are 17 MLAs in Phase 2 including Assam Forest and Fisheries Minister ParimalSuklabaidya (contesting for the 7th time from Dholai), Minister of State for Health, Pijush Hazarika (BJP, from Jagiroad), Minister for Public Health RIhonDaimari (BPF from Udalguri) and Minister of State for Irrigation, BhabeshKalita (BJP from Rangia) are in the fray. Sum Ronhang another Minister in the SarbanandaSonowal-led BJP government is now contesting on a Congress ticket from Diphu. It is earlier this month (March) that he switched parties and joined Congress from BJP.

Former Assam Sahitya Sabha President, ParamanandaRajbonshi (BJP from Sipajhar), 6-times MLA and 4-times former Minister Gautam Roy (BJP from Algapur) are among the prominent names in fight in Phase II.

DulalSutradhar, 82 years old is the oldest candidate in Phase II, contesting as an Independent from Hojai. There are four, 25 years old candidates who are among the youngest in the battle for the 126-seat Assam Legislative Assembly.

BJP is contesting in 34 seats in the 39 constituencies, Congress is contesting in 28, AGP in 6, AIUDF in 7, BPF in 4 and UPPL in 3 seats. There are 176 Independent candidates along with candidates from other parties.

A total of 8, 998 polling stations have been set up. There are 556 all women polling stations. 1,594 auxiliary polling stations have been set up keeping in view the COVID situation.

There are 45,477 people with disabilities in the list of Phase II voters.

Howraghat constituency in KarbiAnglong has the least number of voters at 1,32,339. Hojai is the constituency with the maximum number of voters (2,65,886) in Phase II.
