BONGAIGAON: A porcupine created quite a stir in the Namdapara, Third Block area of Assam's Bongaigaon district early on the morning of November 29, after it was spotted roaming in the locality.

The wild animal was first noticed by residents, who, after a brief chase, managed to capture it. The porcupine’s unexpected appearance in the populated area has sparked curiosity and concern among locals.

The journey of the porcupine from the forest to the neighbourhood remains a mystery.

This situation was later informed to the forest officials, but the authorities to yet to arrive at the scene to handle the situation.

Meanwhile, earlier last month, in a major addition to the diverse wildlife of the state, the existence of the Asiatic golden cat's (Catopuma temminckii) presence in Assam's Manas National Park had been verified.

This significant discovery was re-confirmed by a team comprising officials from the Assam Forest Department, conservationists from region’s leading biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org), as well as several other conservationists from different parts of India.

An intensive annual systematic camera trapping effort lasting for 39,700 trap-days and spanning over eight years between 2011 and 2018 went in vain as no sightings were recorded.
