LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district administration has banned people and vehicles from moving within 2.5 km of the Dollungmukh River on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on February 12 and 13. This is because the Indian Air Force (IAF) will be safely exploding two bombs that were found in the river basin last year.
Villagers discovered two bombs, weighing 500 kg and 100 kg, in the Dollungmukh River at Arunachal Pradesh Border on August 24, 2024. IAF officials thought the bombs were from World War II, but locals believe they might be newer and connected to IAF training at the nearby Dollungmukh air force base as the area is often used for military exercises.
The discovery of the bombs has sparked debates about the origin of the bombs. While IAF officials assert that it dates back to World War II, local residents believe they may have been dropped during recent training exercises and remained unexploded in the riverbed.
The detonation process is set to get over by February 13, after which the restriction will be lifted. The district administration has requested residents to cooperate and adhere to the restrictions for their safety.
An IAF official said, "Our team is well-trained for this task. We are working with the local administration to keep residents safe and complete the operation successfully."
