BOKAKHAT: A serious allegation has been raised regarding land excavation and attempts to extract sand near the Kaliyani River at Kanaighat, located behind Panka village near the Numaligarh Refinery in Golaghat district. These activities have led to the creation of a landscape resembling a secondary river, turning the area into a series of ponds.

In protest, a group of conscious youths from the village has come forward demanding an immediate halt to the excavation activities. They are also calling for the preservation of the river and the adjacent farmland. The entire environmental condition of the area has become alarming and distressing.

Locals are urging the authorities to take the matter seriously. The area was previously beneficial for farmers, particularly for cultivating mustard and pulses. Now, the natural course of the Kaliyani River appears to be changing. Additionally, during the flood season, this altered landscape could become hazardous for wild elephants that traverse the region.
