NAGAON: A massive protest rally was organized in Dhing town, demanding the suspension of physician Dr Mukut Bora, Deputy Superintendent of Dhing FRU (First Referral Unit) on Monday. The protest was sparked by allegations of physical and verbal abuse of an on-duty nurse Mandita Baruah at the Dhing FRU by Dr Bora over a month back.
Two cases have been filed against the physician, accusing him of misconduct, including physical assault and verbal abuse, towards the nurse while she was on duty. Despite the serious allegations, reportedly no action has been taken against Dr Bora by the police or the health department till date.
Following the widespread incident, a six-member inquiry committee, constituted by the Joint Director of Health Services, Nagaon, Dr Tapan Saikia, had investigated the matter and submitted a report. However, the report has not been made public, and no action has been taken against Dr Bora. The inaction against Dr Bora has been attributed to his wife's influence, as she is one of the senior officials of Nagaon district administration.
The agitators from several organizations, including the Dhing Anchalik unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Bir Lachit Sena, Nari Suraksha Samiti, and Sadou Assam Nurse Santha, alleged that Dr Bora's wife's position has shielded him from accountability.
During the stir, the protesters, including hundreds of leaders and workers from those organizations, demanded Dr Bora's suspension and transfer from Dhing. They also criticized the Health Minister, Ashok Singhal, for not taking the matter seriously.
The protest rally, which began from the Dhing FRU premises, culminated in a road blockade at the Dhing market area. The protesters carried placards with various slogans against the authorities concerned for not taking action against the senior physician so far.
The protest was called off after the Circle Officer, Sourabh Das, assured the protesters that action would be taken against Dr Bora. The protesters submitted a memorandum demanding Dr Bora's suspension and transfer, warning that if their demands were not fulfilled, they would go for further agitations.
