BOKAKHAT: On Sunday evening, a massive protest was organized by the Tea Workers’ Liberation Struggle Committee, Khumtai Regional Unit, with the support of villagers and tea garden workers at 1 No. Bootli Khua on Dhodar Ali in the Khumtai area. The protesters demanded a ban on the illegal production of Laligur, a key ingredient used to make illicit Sulai liquor, and the arrest of those supplying Laligur.
The demonstrators highlighted past incidents where hundreds of innocent people across Golaghat District and other parts of Assam lost their lives after consuming illicit Sulai liquor made from Laligur. Such illicit liquor has brought devastation to many families, causing immense suffering.
The protest was organized to safeguard Assamese families and women by demanding a complete ban on Laligur production. It saw the participation of hundreds of people, including Tea Workers’ Liberation Struggle Committee leaders Amrit Nag and Ananta Deep.
During the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the Khumtai Revenue Circle Officer, addressed to the Chief Minister and the Minister of Excise Department, urging immediate action against Laligur production.
