SRIBHUMI: Protests gained momentum across Sribhumi in Assam, where some youths painted Bangladesh's flag on roads in several localities, protesting over the abuse of the Indian national flag and the persecution of Hindu minority groups in Bangladesh. As a mark of strong protest, vehicles ran over the painted flag on the roads.

The protesters criticized the interim Bangladeshi government for failure to address violence against Hindus, warning of intensified protests if things do not change.

As tensions amplify, the trade relations of Sribhumi with Bangladesh have totally come to a grinding halt. The Sribhumi Import and Export Association has suspended the import and export business indefinitely, alleging the security of the minorities in Bangladesh. A spokesperson added that nothing will be exchanged with Bangladesh unless things get better in Bangladesh.

Adding to the momentum, MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha had led protests earlier this week, asking India to reevaluate its trade relations with Bangladesh in light of the present unrest. The call has resonated widely at the local level, forcing trade associations to join the protest movement.

Suspension of trade is likely to lead to significant economic impacts on both sides, which is expected to heighten the urgency of diplomatic efforts to tackle the growing crisis. Meanwhile, protesters remain adamant that there should be justice for the persecuted minorities.
