SONARI: Local people of Sonari in Charideo staged a protest demanding the immediate improvement of the conditions of the roads in the region.
A large number of local men and women came out to the street on Sunday in the 126 Sadiya Legislative Assembly Constituency in demand for the development of the road connecting Dhola Village Pachali to Megela village. This 10 km stretch of road comes under the Saikhowa Development Block and its pathetic conditions have created problems for the local people over time.
This road plays a very important role for the rural population and the local people alleged that the movement of heavy vehicles belonging to Oil India Limited has caused severe damage to the road and created a large number of potholes. They demanded that steps be taken immediately towards the repairs of the road. They also demanded that the road be expanded on both sides and proper safety features be added. Hundreds of villages took part in the protest and prevented the movement of any vehicle belonging to Oil India Limited on the road on Sunday.
Previously, over two hundred shopkeepers having their shops in the Patakata weekly market protested and demanded that the market be allowed to function where it is currently functioning in front of the District Commissioner and the Chief Secretary of the Zila Parishad. It is important to note that the Patakata weekly market is the largest market in the South Salmara Mankachar district of the state. This important market was originally located on the banks of the river, but the land was lost to soil erosion by the river. Following this, the shopkeepers decided to shift shop to several locations, including the banks of the river, the playground of the Patakata M V School and even the private land of local people. Thus causing multiple problems for the shopkeepers in setting up temporary setups.
