DIBRUGARH: In a rare sighting, elusive marbled cats were spotted through camera traps in Dehing Patkai National Park.
Speaking to the correspondent, Digboi DFO TC Ranjit Ram said, “We have spotted 2-3 marbled cats in Dehing Patkai National Park and Reserve Forest during our two months of camera trapping. The camera trapping was started from November 2024 with Wildlife Institute of India (WII) jointly and during the two-month period, the cameras trapped 2-3 marbled cats.”
In a Facebook post, Assam Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary wrote, “Exciting conservation news!! Our camera trap inside Dehing Patkai National Park just captured a rare sighting of elusive Marbled Cat. The marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata) is a small wild cat native from the eastern Himalayas to Southeast Asia, where it inhabits forests up to an elevation of 2,500 m. It has been listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List.”
