SILCHAR: 415 millilitres of rainfall in the last 24 hours, which broke a 132-year record, pushed the second largest city of Assam to the first bout of flood in 2025. In 1893, the southern Assam city recorded 290.3 mm rainfall and ever since, the rainfall in a particular day has not crossed 300 mm till now.
Silchar would go to its first corporation election, reportedly in September. But the last 48 hours of pouring unmasked the skeleton of its civic infrastructure in the face of clogged water in maximum lanes, and even in two main roads, one leading to Mizoram and another to the medical college, Assam University, and the NIT.
The administration declared holidays in all the schools and colleges till Tuesday. Meanwhile the VIP road leading to the airport was closed due to its poor condition. Rail services have also been affected as almost all the short distance trains have been rescheduled since Friday. Silchar-Dullabcherra Passenger Train was cancelled.
On the other hand, the flood-affected people living in low-lying areas have started to move to makeshift relief camps in various schools.
