SIVASAGAR: The Sivasagar Municipal Board (SMB), with a legacy of over 106 years, has set a new record in tax collection this year. According to an official press release issued by the SMB’s Executive Officer Debabrata Sharma, the municipality has already collected over Rs 5 crore in holding tax alone till March 2025, even though a few days remain before the end of the 2024-2025 financial year.
This achievement is seen as a result of the Assam Government’s emphasis on strengthening revenue generation under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had issued directives to local bodies, corporations, and municipalities to prioritize revenue collection.
In line with this policy, Sivasagar Municipal Board has successfully surpassed the revenue target set by the state government and created a historic milestone in its tax collection history. Executive Officer Debabrata Sharma credited this success to the dedication and sincerity of the municipality’s tax department employees, along with the relentless efforts of SMB Chairperson Mrinali Konwar, Vice-Chairperson Sanjib Bora, all the municipal members, and staff.
The SMB has undertaken various projects, including solid waste disposal and sewage management at Palashani, completion of tender process under AMRUT 2.0 scheme worth Rs 55 crore, road and drain construction, street lighting across municipal wards, construction of raised platforms for traders at the Central Market, installation of a clock tower at Muktinath Chariali, development of an Eco Park at Phukan Nagar, renovation of all city parks, and installation of street lights on the Dikhow Bridge. However, despite this impressive revenue collection, citizens have expressed concern over the poor condition of many footpaths in the town, which has led to several accidents, including serious injuries to students and pedestrians. Local residents have urged the municipal authorities to prioritize immediate repair and maintenance of footpaths and ensure public safety.
