Guwahati: Approximately 47.70 voter turnout was registered until 1 PM in the Majuli by-polls which began at 7AM on Monday.

According to an official, so far, polling has been peaceful as no untoward incident has been reported from any of 203 polling stations.

In a bid to restrict any untoward incident in Majuli, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel are keeping a strict vigil in the district, which is also the world's largest river island.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, posted the figures stating the estimated poll percent until 1 PM.

As many as 1,33,227 is eligible to exercise their franchise in the by-election of which 67,819 are male and 65,408 female.

From Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bhuban Gam is contesting from the Majuli seat while from the the opposition Chittaranjan Basumatary of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Bhaity Richong of the SUCI(C) are contesting.

The election is being held to following the resignation of Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Aysuh Sarbananda Sonowal who was elected to the Rajya Sabha on September 27.

Sonowal, who has also served the state as Chief Minister, was elected to the state legislative assembly from Majuli constituency for two consecutive terms in 2016 and 2021.
