New Delhi: Assam, one of the northeastern states, has witnessed the highest number of sedition cases registered in the country in the last year.

As per a report by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Assam registered 14.52 per cent of the total number of sedition cases registered in the country.

''A total of 475 sedition cases were registered in India since 2014, out of which 69 cases were reported from Assam,'' the NCRB report said.

The report named 'Crime in India 2021' further mentioned that one of every six sedition cases is reported from Assam.

It is to be noted that India registers sedition cases under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the second state behind Assam is Haryana, which holds a record of 42 cases in the last eight years.

Jharkhand and Karnataka on the other hand put up 40 and 38 cases respectively for the count.

Notably, in the year 2014, Delhi stood at the top among the Union Territories to register such cases with a figure of 13 cases.

The Northeast region, however, has two states namely Meghalaya and Mizoram who have not registered a single sedition case yet.

NCRB's 'Crime in India 2021' report also drew the conclusion that the nation saw a slight increase in the cases registered from 2020 to 2021 as the country registered a total of 76 sedition cases in 2021, which was 73 cases in 2020.

The figures for the same stood at 93, 70, 51, 35, 30 and 47 for the years 2019-2014 respectively.

According to crime statistics reports by NCRB, Assam also saw the highest number of sedition-related arrests between 2018-2020.
