MANGALDAI: Despite all efforts of the staff of the Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) to reunite the ill-fated six-month-old baby elephant with its mother or the herd in the park, finally the baby has found a new home at the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

On April 29, the inhabitants of Apria Sar – a riverine Sar under Mangaldai Police Station – rescued the baby elephant which was swept away by the rising waters of the Brahmaputra River. On receiving the information, the staff of ONP on that day immediately rushed to the remote area despite adverse weather and took it to ONPTR with the hope of reuniting it with its mother or the herd. As the baby elephant failed to find its mother, the ONPTR authority shifted it to KNP on May 1 for its proper care and nurturing.

“We had tried our best to reunite the baby elephant with its mother for three days, but unable to locate the mother and the herd, we have shifted it to KNP for its proper care. The baby elephant is now doing well at KNP,” said DFO of Mangaldai Wildlife Division Pradipta Barua while talking to “The Sentinel” on Saturday afternoon.
