SILCHAR: Assam Rifles has earned the reputation of being 'a friend of people of north east' which plays constructive role both in peace and war. Its works for civil society in reaching out relief to people in distress during calamities and adversities are well appreciated. In the latest instance, physically challenged inmates of an NGO of this town, often ignored, have been provided substantial relief materials during the critical time of COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the civil participation of the Frontier Force of Northeast is remarkable.

During its recent Raising Day at Srikona near Silchar town, Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) celebrated the 9th historic occasion following all the COVID precautionary measures as per directives of the Central Government. Consistent with the tradition, a special sainik sammelan was conducted wherein Major General GAV Reddy, Shaurya Chakra, Vishist Seva Medal, extended warm greetings and good wishes to all ranks of the formation and apprised them of the stupendous feats achieved by the youngest Headquarters of Assam Rifles in such a short time. He felicitated the troops for their exemplary work.

In order to make the occasion memorable and noble, a blood donation camp was also organised which witnessed impressive participation from all ranks of the Headquarters. More than hundred individuals donated blood for their compatriots in need and in crisis. But there is a sad part. S K Wagle (46), a valiant jawan of Assam Rifles, who was admitted in Silchar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday tested COVID positive by Rapid Antigen Test. But, unfortunately, he died within an hour. His case was referred to the Death Audit Board which declared his case as COVID death. The district administration of Cachar took possession of his body and cremated him at a far flung isolated area of Lakhipur sub division. Along with Assam Rifles, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Health etc. in a tweet deeply mourned his death.
