
GUWAHATI: Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog tabled a Rs. 2.63 lakh crore budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, with a projected deficit of Rs. 620.27 crore.
Individuals earning up to Rs. 15,000 per month will be exempted from professional tax under this budget. This will be beneficial to over 1.43 lakh taxpayers and families and will enhance their purchasing power.
In a move to support Assam’s tea industry, the tax holiday for green tea leaves has been extended for two more years.
With an allocation of Rs. 500 crore to propel industrial growth, Assam will set up new industrial parks in Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Silchar, Palashbari, Jagiroad, Tezpur, and Nalbari.
In addition to it, Palashbari and Jagiroad will get a township project with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). An investment of Rs. 8,000 crore has been earmarked to upgrade urban infrastructure.
Moreover, the state government has unveiled the Gaja Mitra Initiative to address the rising incidents of human-elephant conflicts in the five affected districts of Goalpara, Tezpur, Udalguri, Baksa and Nagaon.
The elephant movements will be monitored by AI-powered cameras that will be installed at key points. Dedicated Gaja Mitra teams will be constituted to deal with conflict zones and ensure rapid response.
