Assam : Run for Unity to Commemorate Sardar Patel's Birthday
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's Birthday is celebrated as National Unity Day in India.
GUWAHATI: October 31 is celebrated as the National Unity Day as a mark of respect to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary. Several events were organized across the country to mark the 147th birth anniversary this year.
In the state of Assam, a Run for Unity was organized to mark the special day. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister for ports, shipping and waterways, Sarbananda Sonwal flagged off the run on Monday. The run started from the premises of the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati and saw the participation of people from various walks of life. Students, sports personalities, healthcare workers, members of police and other forces all participate in the Run for Unity.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister paid his tributes to the great leader on this occasion. He also mentioned the strong resolve and decisive leadership quality of Sardar Patel and mentioned it to be the base on which modern India developed.
The Union Home Minister was present for the celebration in New Delhi. He also flagged off the Run for Unity from the National Stadium and about 8000 people participated in the run. He had previously written to all the states so that each district can organize unity runs to mark the occasion.
And the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi visited the Statue of Unity located at Kevadia in Gujarat to pay homage to Sardar Patel on his birthday.
Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region of India, Gangapuram Kishan Reddy was present for the celebrations in Hyderabad. He flagged off the run from the People's Plaza at Tank Bund to Saifabad in the city.
In Goa, the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and Sports Authority hosted the event at the Athletic Stadium.
