DOOMDOOMA: Under the auspices of Doomdooma Satadol Sakha Xahitya Xabha (DSSXX), the 25th death anniversary of Sahitya Surya Nirode Chaudhury was observed on Monday with president Deben Deka in the chair. The programme got underway with lighting of the lamp in front of his portrait by Arjun Baruah, former President, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha (TZXX) followed by smriti tarpan initiated by Mohan Moran, immediate Past President TZXX.
After the presentation of Axam Xahitya Xabha’s theme song ‘Chiro Senehi Mor Bhakha Janoni’, Secretary Nityananda Das explained the objectives of the meeting. It was followed by the inaugural speech by Mohan Moran, Immediate Past President, TZXX.
Attending the function as an invited speaker, senior journalist and former President, Assam Science Writers Association (ASWA) Dhiren Deka spoke about the versatile personality of Nirode Chaudhury as writer, journalist, film critic, script writer, and song composer. “Chaudhury is considered as precursor of Criminal Literature of Assam after coverage of the dastardly murder story where the wife and three daughters were killed by the then Dhubri District and Session Judge Upen Rajkhowa, first in a popular weekly and later, published as a book titled ‘Dhuburi Hatyakanda Aru Rajkhowar Bichar’. He also published a book in Assamese ‘Buri Gangat Jui’ based on his visit to Bangladesh just after its liberation,” speaker Deka said, adding that Chaudhury developed a life-long close relationship with Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika after publishing an interview on him while still a student. Incidentally, Bhupen Hazarika got the best music director’s award by scoring music in the film ‘Chameli Memsab’ based on his story. Incidentally, like Hindi film Mughal-E-Azam, a colour version of ‘Chameli Mehsab’ is now in the process after completion of 50 years of its release in 1975.
Promising writer Birke Bahadur Thapa was awarded this year’s ‘Sahitya Surya Nirode Chaudhury award’ which consists of cash of rupees ten thousand offered by Late Chaudhury’s wife Dr Indira Chaudhury, a memento, a citation, a bundle of books and a challeng chadar. The award was handed over to him in the meeting jointly by Arjun Baruah, former President, TZXX, Chandra Kumar Baruah, Vice- President, TZXX and Dhiren Deka, former President, ASWA. Receiving the award, litterateur Thapa expressed his gratitude to DSSXX and the family members of Nirode Chaudhury. He urged the younger generation to draw inspiration by reading Chaudhury’s books.
The meeting was also addressed by Chandra Kumar Baruah, Vice- President, TZXX. The members presented the song ‘Oh Bideshi Bandhu’ in chorus and two others songs were performed by Anamika Lahkar and child artist Baristha Deka. Bhritasmi Sarma enthralled the audience by presenting a dance to the tune of ‘Asom Deshar Bagichare’ from the film ‘Chameli Memsaab.’
The meeting came to an end with President Deben Deka’s president’s remarks and the singing of Assam Sangeet ‘O Mor Aponar Desh.’
