DIBRUGARH: Ahead of Republic Day celebrations, police in several districts of upper Assam are removing abandoned vehicles from streets, highways, bus terminals, and marketplaces. This comes after last year’s Independence Day incident, when the banned group ULFA-I planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in abandoned vehicles across the state.
For the past few days, police have been clearing unclaimed vehicles from high-risk areas as a safety measure. Along with this, they are conducting thorough checks using sniffer dogs to look for any explosives. The goal is to prevent any potential security threats and reduce hiding spots for bombs.
During Independence Day 2024, ULFA-I claimed to have planted bombs at 24 locations in Assam, but most of them failed to detonate due to technical issues. Security forces later found 11 IED-like objects, mostly in abandoned vehicles.
In response, a joint operation by Assam Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) led to the arrest of 15 people involved in the plot, including three women.
As Republic Day approaches, police in districts like Sivasagar and Tinsukia are working to ensure safety by removing abandoned vehicles and conducting extra security checks. Authorities are focused on preventing any disruptions and making sure the celebrations go smoothly.
The Golaghat district administration is also preparing for a peaceful 76th Republic Day celebration with tight security. The day will begin with Probhat Pheri at 8:30 AM, followed by flag hoisting at government and non-government offices at 7:30 AM. Floral tributes will be offered to Mahatma Gandhi and Martyr Kushal Konwar at 8:45 AM.
