Silchar: Former vice principal of Cachar High School and a noted CPM leader Durgesh Ranjan Purkayastha breathed his last on Sunday following brain stroke. He was 85. He left behind his wife, one daughter and son.

Purkayastha took a leading role in the 1972 language movement. He spent a few days in jail too. An active CPIM member, Purkayastha was the general secretary of the local unit of the left party. After retirement Purkayastha established a private school in Sonabarighat. Family sources said, Purkayastha faced a massive brain stroke on December 15 and he was admitted in a private nursing home. A few days back he returned to his home.
